Research and Development on Algorithms for Evaluating Mental Wellness Using Heart Rate Variability Measured by Wearable Devices

You are cordially invited to participate in a study related to mental wellness evaluation using Heart Rate Variability (HRV) measured by wearable devices (HREC Ref. No.: EA1903005). We are recruiting participants for two activities related to this study, namely Lab-based Study and 7-day Study. You may join any one of the two activities, or join both to receive up to HKD 1400 worth of rewards!
Lab-based Study
Time
Any 2.5 hours
between 1000 – 2230
from Now to Feb 28
Venue
Lab @ HKU
Procedures
Lab-based Study consists of two parts, which are the Math Test and the Exercise Test. You will be asked to perform some designed activities while wearing the provided heart rate monitoring devices.
1. Math Test (about 90 min)
– Complete simple arithmetic tasks
– Sit with eyes closed
2. Exercise Test (about 45 min)
– Ride exercise bike
Value of Rewards
Basic Remuneration: HKD 400
Performance-based Bonus: HKD 200
Remark(s)
– Participant will need to wear clothing suitable for exercising to perform the Exercise Test.
– You may experiment some mild fatigue and discomforts due to the physical exercises involved in the procedure. You are free to take breaks anytime during the study procedure.
7-day Study
Time
Any 7 consecutive days
between Now to Feb 28
Venue
Anywhere!
Procedures
For a period of 7 consecutive days, you will be required to wear a smart wristband throughout the days, including sleep hours, to measure your heart activities and movements. Meanwhile, you will need to report your daily activities and to complete self-assessment of mental states regularly. In this period, you are free to carry out your daily activities as usual.
Value of Rewards
Basic Remuneration: HKD 800
Remark(s)
– Participant needs to possess an iOS device and install an application for uploading data and reporting regularly.
– Participant will need to avoid intake of caffeine, tobacco or alcohol during the study period and the day before the study starts.
– Participant will need to collect the equipment at our laboratory in a day before the study starts, and return the equipment in another day after the 7-day procedure.
Added (20210103)
– During the 7 consecutive days, participant will need to wear a wristband-type heart rate monitor to collect data. Throughout this period, participant will all need to keep the iOS device close to oneself, except some special period(s), in each of the days.
To register, press the “SIGN UP” button below and fill in the registration form. Successful applicant will receive an email regarding further details of the study.
After your first time of registration, if you would like to modify the content of your registration form (e.g. to apply for another time slot), you may press the button “SIGN UP” again to modify your response.
Lab-based Study
Lab-based Study has successfully completed. Thank you very much for the interests and helps from many participants!
7-day Study
Eligibility
- Aged between 18 and 45
- High-school education level
- Healthy
- W/out previous medical record of cardiovascular, mental or neurological disorders;
- Not using any medications that may affect cardiovascular mental or neurological activity.
- For Lab-based Study:
- No physical limitations that will preclude the participant from participating in the Exercise Test, e.g.
- Cardiovascular or respiratory disease;
- Orthopedic problems.
- No physical limitations that will preclude the participant from participating in the Exercise Test, e.g.
Confidentiality
Except for the purpose of contacting the participant, all data collected do NOT contain any personal identity information. At the end of this study, the contact information will be deleted. The anonymous data will be stored in our project server indefinitely, and may be made publicly accessible for academic research purpose (e.g. for benchmarking future research in using heart rate variability to evaluate mental states)
Participation and Withdrawal
You can quit your participation at any time. If you decide to contribute to our project by completing the study procedures and allowing us to use the data collected from you, you will receive rewards for your participation.
